The Spanish navy proudly demonstrated this today when the <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano <\/span> in C\u00e1diz. After ten months, she completed her 11th circumnavigation under the watchful eye of King Felipe VI. The sailing ship, which was commissioned in 1928, was accompanied on its final miles by numerous sailing and motor yachts.<br \/>\nThe impressive journey took the <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano <\/span> to mark the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe. The ports of call were San Julian in Argentina, Punta Arenas in Chile, the US territory of Guam, Samar and Cebu in the Philippines as well as Ternate and Tidore in Indonesia, the same ports that the explorer Magellan and the ship master of the <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Concepcion<\/span> had visited Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano. Elcano took command of the Victoria shortly after Magellan's death on the Philippine island of Mactan in 1521 and brought the expedition's last remaining ship home safely.<br \/>\nDue to the pandemic, the crew of the <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Elcano<\/span> They were unable to enjoy shore leave in the exotic harbours during the long months. The crew and students must have been looking forward to seeing their loved ones again all the more. First, however, King Felipe went on board to greet the men and women.
