It currently forms the centrepiece of the UK Carrier Strike Group, which comprises a total of nine ships and a submarine. A spokeswoman for the Royal Navy has confirmed that around one hundred soldiers on board have tested positive for Covid-19. The outbreak occurred despite applicable hygiene rules such as face masks and social distancing. In addition to the aircraft carrier, other ships in the organisation were also affected. British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said that all crew members had received two doses of the vaccine before setting sail.
Also on board are aircraft and soldiers from the US Marines. The unit left the UK at the end of May for a 28-week tour. It is heading for Japan via the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The infections were detected during a routine inspection. According to the Royal Navy, there is currently no plan to cancel the voyage.
Before leaving port, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Queen Elizabeth II were on board the carrier to bid farewell to the crew.

Text: mb; Photo: US Navy

Die BBC meldet den Ausbruch von Covid an Bord des britischen Flugzeugträgers Queen Elizabeth.
