The corvette built at the shipyard is currently still moored there Nitzachonwhich, together with her sister ship Atzmaut was handed over to the Israeli navy on 27 July. Among other things, the four Sa'ar 6 corvettes will be used to secure the natural gas fields off the country's coast.

Greenpeace is calling on the German government to immediately stop arms exports to protect fossil fuels. The protest by the activists, who have drawn a line in front of the corvette with five life rafts, four kayaks and floats, is intended to emphasise this. Several banners read "Defend the climate, not fossil fuels" in English, German and Hebrew. "Investing in the protection of gas fields is irresponsible in times of climate crisis. These funds should be earmarked for renewable energies," said Jonathan Aikhenbaum, Country Director of Greenpeace Israel.

According to Greenpeace, the activists come from Germany and Israel. The police are on site with two boats, but have not yet intervened in the peaceful protests. The action is expected to continue into the evening hours. To avoid hypothermia, the swimmers take turns and recover in the life rafts in the meantime. Contacts with the crew of the Nitzachon There were none. A spokesperson for the environmental protection organisation emphasised that the corvette should not be entered.

The police are on site

Text: mb; Photo: Greenpeace/Jörg Modrow

Seit den frühen Morgenstunden demonstrieren dreizehn Aktivisten von Greenpeace im Hafenbecken der Kieler Werft Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
