The four FK destroyers of the Almirante-Brown class (Meko 360 H2) built by Blohm+Voss in the early 1980s are the largest units in Argentina and are equipped with four gas turbines for propulsion. Two are connected to each shaft, and if they are not running for slow speed, nothing works! After the part was handed over to an English company for repair in 2010, the political situation between the two countries worsened. Argentina and the UK, London imposed export restrictions, the part could no longer be delivered and the repair costs were constantly compounded by hefty storage costs. When the restrictions were eased in 2018, however, Buenos Aires was unwilling and unable to pay these costs - which, at around 200,000 dollars, roughly corresponded to the new price of the part. Whether the part still exists at all is questionable, as London threatened to seriously consider scrapping it if it wasn't paid for. Schilda is everywhere. With so much common sense, the only thing left for the unfortunate crew to practise is to do their role on the pier - primarily the salvage roll, as the photo shows.

subscribe to marineforum
