{"id":26840,"date":"2023-01-18T13:34:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T12:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marineforum.online\/?p=26840"},"modified":"2025-09-29T21:14:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T19:14:04","slug":"fire-defence-on-container-ships-recommendations-of-the-dnv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marineforum.online\/en\/brandabwehr-auf-containerschiffen-empfehlungen-des-dnv\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire defence on container ships: Recommendations of the DNV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What is - or at least should be - a technical design principle on grey ships and a daily routine in service operations, does not have to be just as consistently decisive on civilian-crewed, cost-oriented cargo and tanker ships: Fire safety in harbour and sea operations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Fire hazard on container ships<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the civilian sector, it is less the handling of flammable and explosive substances inside the ship than the cargo in the freight or container hold. In the case of containers in particular, cargo knowledge and monitoring is rarely available at all times. This is why the topic of \"Containership Fire Safety\" is currently on the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) two-year agenda: In the SSE (Ship System &amp; Equipment) subcommittee, amendments are to be made to SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974) and the FSS Code<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (International Code for Fire Safety Systems), which will become mandatory in five years' time, i.e. on 1 January 2028.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Recommended solutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In a position paper on \"Reducing the risks of cargo fires on container ships\", the DNV (Deutscher Nautischer Verein von 1868 e.V.) recommends the following solutions for newbuilds of these ships:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">- the constructive installation of fire compartments below deck,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">- dividing the upper deck into fire compartments, and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">- the installation of fire alarm systems in all areas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">These proposals are only individual measures that need to be supplemented by other results and alternative solutions from ongoing studies on container ship fires.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26843\" style=\"width: 551px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26843\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-300x197.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-1024x672.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-768x504.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-1080x709.jpg 1080w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-750x493.jpg 750w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024-1140x749.jpg 1140w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ziv-containerbrand-mai21-srilankaairforceafpmedia.media_.f4476dd9-d3ec-4e82-9f14-69a1dce73887.original1024.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\"X-Press Pearl\" off Colombo, May 2021 Photo: Sri Lanka Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Objectives of the DNV<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The primary aim of these recommendations is to contain the fire more quickly and effectively and thus reduce the use of extinguishing water, resulting in a lower environmental impact. According to the DNV's press release, the second objective of better protection of the ship and cargo is, of course, to protect the lives and health of seafarers more effectively.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Position paper<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The full position paper can be downloaded from the DNV website at <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><u><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnvev.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.dnvev.de<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">can be viewed and downloaded.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Lean sentence at the end<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A handful of ship's safety officers from the frigates and supply vessels of Operational Flotilla 2 would have been at the watch boat coffee together with instructors from the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Marine Damage Prevention Training Centre (EAZS M) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">came to a strikingly similar conclusion. This actually applies to every navy in the world that handles hazardous substances.
