From a press release of the Naval Command:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On Monday, 20 March 2023 at 10 a.m., the German Navy's sail training ship, the \"Gorch Fock\", will leave the city of Kiel after a long winter break for its 175th training voyage abroad and will therefore not be in its home port for the 175th anniversary of the founding of the German Navy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Under the command of Captain Andreas-Peter Graf von Kielmansegg (56), the voyage will initially head south to Spain and Portugal in the anniversary year. The return journey will take the ship and crew back to Kiel via Ireland. A good 250 naval officer candidates from Crew 2022 will gain their first experience on board the tall ship during three voyages as part of their \"basic seamanship training\". Among them are cadets from Korea, Colombia, Malaysia, France, Togo, Cameroon, Benin and Senegal. On board the sail training ship, they learn the basic nautical skills and experience the importance of teamwork and camaraderie in practice. They then move on to the academic part of their training at the Bundeswehr universities in Hamburg and Munich.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"I hope that, in addition to the formal training objectives, we create a positive experience of seafaring. It would be nice if everyone took away the experience that seafaring and the camaraderie experienced can be a lot of fun. If we succeed in this and if everyone returns home safe and sound, then it will have been a happy voyage,\" says the commander.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The white barque is expected back on 7 July 2023, which means that the \"Gorch Fock\" will not be moored at her original berth, the Gorch Fock pier, for Kiel Week 2023.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since its commissioning in December 1958, around 15,000 officer and non-commissioned officer candidates have been trained on the planks of the \"Gorch Fock\".
