The ship belongs to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and is part of the Navy's Maritime Prepositioning Force. There were 53 people on board at the time of the fire. According to a statement from the MSC, the crew managed to fight the fire using the ship's own CO2 fire extinguishing system. The cause of the fire and the damage to the ship are still being investigated.
