At its meeting on 15 May 2024, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag released a total of 1.9 billion euros for four projects that affect the entire operational spectrum of the Bundeswehr. One project will maintain the operational availability of the Brandenburg class.<\/p>\n

Since their commissioning between 1994 and 1996, the four Class 123 frigates have primarily been used for submarine hunting. To this end, they can deploy both their bow sonar and two \"Sea Lynx\" helicopters, which extend the submarine hunting range of the ships with their diving sonar and torpedoes.<\/p>\n

From 2026 to 2029, the approximately 30-year-old frigates can now be comprehensively modernised. According to the Bundeswehr, the radar equipment and the command and weapon deployment system are to be replaced. In addition, the communication and sensor systems as well as the submarine hunting capability will be adapted or expanded and the missiles will be renewed. Around 1.2 billion euros are available for this purpose.<\/p>\n

Once the modernisation is complete, the Brandenburg-class ships will be able to continue to be used until at least 2035 to provide Germany and NATO with the necessary capabilities for national and alliance defence.<\/p>\n
