A German Navy helicopter was presumably shot at with signalling ammunition by the crew of a Russian ship. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) briefly mentioned the incident to the German Press Agency (dpa) on the fringes of a NATO meeting in Brussels. However, she did not give any details. Signalling ammunition is usually only fired in emergency situations. According to dpa information, the incident occurred last week when the helicopter was travelling in the Baltic Sea for reconnaissance.<\/p>\n
Baerbock had pointed out that ships involved in circumventing sanctions due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine were repeatedly travelling in the Baltic Sea. The Foreign Minister announced that the monitoring of pipelines and data cables in the Baltic Sea would be intensified.<\/p>\n
The reason for this is the increase in hybrid threats and attacks emanating from Russia and its supporters, but also from China. These include the destruction of cables, the jamming of the global positioning system GPS and now also the incident with the German Bundeswehr helicopter and the Russian ship.
\nThe Ministry of Defence (BMVg) has not yet commented on the specific case. Breaches of the rules at sea or in airspace happen from time to time. And then it is a matter of the navy or the air force reacting in a level-headed manner and de-escalating, said a BMVg spokesperson in response to a question at the Berlin government press conference.<\/p>\n
