{"id":43456,"date":"2025-03-05T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T14:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marineforum.online\/?p=43456"},"modified":"2025-09-29T21:58:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T19:58:43","slug":"money-is-not-the-problem-time-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marineforum.online\/en\/geld-ist-nicht-das-problem-die-zeit-ist-es\/","title":{"rendered":"Money is not the problem, time is"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Stirring debate on the threat on NATO's eastern flank<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong data-start=\"160\" data-end=\"209\">GIDS (German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies)<\/strong> had invited to a livestream on YouTube, as we reported yesterday on <em data-start=\"280\" data-end=\"300\">marineforum.online\/<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/marineforum.online\/en\/gids-live-threat-on-natos-eastern-flank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIDS live: Threat on NATO's eastern flank<\/a>) were announced.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"156\" data-end=\"842\">The topic <strong data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"427\">\"NATO's eastern flank: How great is the threat of war?\"<\/strong> not only attracted around <strong data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"463\">250 guests<\/strong> into the <strong data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"513\">International Maritime Museum Hamburg<\/strong>but also met with a great response online. Many security policy lectures and debates have already taken place on deck 10 of the historic building, but rarely has the topic been so explosive and topical. The seats on site were fully booked early on, and even at the start of the livestream there were <strong data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"839\">Around 250 registrations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"156\" data-end=\"842\"><strong data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"879\">High-calibre panel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"913\">The panellists discussed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"913\"><strong data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"934\">Marika Linntam<\/strong>Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Germany<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1130\"><strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1037\">Lieutenant General J\u00fcrgen-Joachim von Sandrart<\/strong>until the end of November 2024 Commander of the <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1110\">Multinational Corps Northeast<\/strong> in Szczecin, Poland<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1304\"><strong data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1152\">Konrad Schuller<\/strong>political correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, who worked as a correspondent for Poland and Ukraine from 2004 to 2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the opening by <strong data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1347\">Colonel Klenz<\/strong> from the <strong data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1391\">Command and Staff College of the Bundeswehr<\/strong> managed <strong data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1432\">Captain at sea Dr Andre Pecher<\/strong> introduced the topic as moderator. He described the threat situation at the <strong data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1522\">NATO's eastern flank<\/strong> as a \"petri dish\" for geopolitical tensions and emphasised the risk of a <strong data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1627\">Russian attack<\/strong> - especially for the <strong data-start=\"1651\" data-end=\"1673\">Baltic states<\/strong>which he described as \"frontline states\". The future <strong data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1800\">NATO's orientation and the course of the US government<\/strong> in the room - a topic that hovered unspoken over the entire debate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clear words on the security situation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"2208\"><strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1969\">Estonian Ambassador Marika Linntam<\/strong> emphasised the importance of the transatlantic alliance: \"We have been allies for 20 years - there is no reason why Europe should not be strongly opposed. Our economy is bigger, our population is many times bigger.\"<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2517\"><strong data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2242\">Lieutenant General von Sandrart<\/strong> drew parallels to the <strong data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2278\">Cold War<\/strong> and emphasised that security awareness in the <strong data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2340\">Eastern Europe<\/strong> was already pronounced much earlier than in <strong data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2391\">Berlin<\/strong>. Looking back, he realised self-critically: \"I had Putin under control - my real challenge was in Berlin.\"<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2519\" data-end=\"2788\">Also <strong data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2543\">Konrad Schuller<\/strong> reflected self-critically: he had misjudged Russia just as much as many Western politicians. He shed light on the historical development, starting with <strong data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2722\">Gorbachev<\/strong>about the <strong data-start=\"2733\" data-end=\"2757\">Chechen war,<\/strong> up to <strong data-start=\"2769\" data-end=\"2785\">Boris Yeltsin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General von Sandrart<\/strong> made the point clearly and unequivocally that for Russia the <strong>\"window of opportunity\"<\/strong> the faster we react as the West. On the timeline, we would have three threats: The one from the East, the more recent one from the West, and very clearly also the one from within. His statement that the problem is not money, but time, was still echoing through the room when the intention of the possible new coalition government to make military investments, which had been finalised in the meantime and became known at the same time, filtered through. This event was impressive, necessary and impressive in its clarity. Andre Pecher asked the Estonian ambassador to make the closing statement and summarise the evening. <strong>Conclusion<\/strong>The Baltic states are self-confidently committed to the alliance and are nationally stable in favour of Western values; Europe is strong and can defend itself if it wants to. The media and politicians should self-critically scrutinise the mistakes of the past decades, and a self-confident approach to the American government is necessary. The key question of the evening <strong>General von Sandrart: \"What are we standing up for?\"<\/strong>. By his own admission, he is very reluctant to retire in three weeks' time. The hope remains that this strong voice - like the others - will be heard in politics and society.<\/p>\n<p>The debate can be followed in the livestream - an hour and a half that is well worth it. So far, the stream has been watched almost <strong data-start=\"4462\" data-end=\"4486\">1,900 times <\/strong>called.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
