Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed several agreements with international partners during a trip abroad. According to the Canadian Ministry of Defence, this is intended to strengthen cooperation with key allies. In addition to Germany, corresponding agreements were also signed with Indonesia, Poland and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
To kick off his trip through Europe, Carney first paid a visit to the Ukrainian capital Kiev and took part in Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations. During his visit, Carney pledged an additional two billion Canadian dollars (1.24 billion euros) to Ukraine. This includes around 310 million euros as part of the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), through which NATO allies can finance the purchase of US weapons for Ukraine. Canada now follows Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, which also contribute to the PURL.<\/p>\n
After Ukraine, the Canadian Prime Minister visited Warsaw (Poland), Berlin and Riga (Latvia). At the meeting with his German and Polish counterparts, closer cooperation was agreed on both defence and critical minerals. In Latvia, Carney declared that Canadian troops would be stationed in the Baltic country until 2029 as part of Operation Reassurance.<\/p>\n
Canada and the European Union signed a security and defence partnership back in June of this year. With these clear statements, Canada is clearly aligning itself with its European partners.<\/p>\n
