A year ago, the Canadian Procurement Agency launched a request for information to sound out possible offers and co-operations. Ottawa announced at the end of August that the German shipbuilder TKMS and the Korean company Hanwha Ocean Co had been filtered out of the 25 responses as potential partners. TKMS offers the 212CD submarines, which are being procured by Germany together with Norway. A corresponding \"trilateral strategic maritime partnership\" focussing on securing the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC) in the North Atlantic and the Arctic has met with political approval on this side of the Atlantic - although this traditional term encompasses more than ever the cables that secure the underwater connections between nations.
