She was accompanied by the First of Class, the corvette „Braunschweig“. The 89-metre-long boat belongs to the second construction batch of the K 130 class and is therefore one of the most modern units in the German Navy. The boat was built by the K130 consortium (ARGE), which includes the NVL Group, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and GERMAN NAVAL YARDS KIEL. The boats in this second batch were designed specifically for the Baltic Sea and the coastal area and were commissioned as a supplementary procurement. Compared to its predecessors, the interior of the second construction lot has been significantly revised and equipped with more modern weapon systems, sensors and the latest IT technology. The core capabilities include reconnaissance of the surface situation and maritime target engagement.

The boat was christened in Hamburg in May 2024 by First Mayor Gabriele Luczak-Schwarz. The corvette „Karlsruhe“ is now the sixth naval unit to bear the traditional name of the fan-shaped city in Baden. In February 2025, frigate captain Markus Jonas officially took command of the boat.

At the handover of command, Karlsruhe's mayor Dr Albert Käuflein emphasised the deep bond with the crew, which is reflected in particular in the city's „Fidelitas“ coat of arms. The Latin term „Fidelitas“ stands for „loyalty and reliability“ and has adorned the golden diagonal bar on the red shield of Karlsruhe's coat of arms in black capital letters since 1733. Originally the motto of the House Order of Baden, „Fidelitas“ still characterises the image of the city today as an official emblem and in the names of many local organisations. For the navy, this motto has a special symbolic power: true to the motto of loyalty, the sponsor city stands firmly behind the commander and crew as a reliable second home port.

The „Karlsruhe“ is currently still sailing under the shipyard flag. The boat will be put into service once all the necessary tests have been completed.
The Marineforum wishes a successful trial and welcomes the boat and crew to Warnemünde.

Text & Photo: Daniel Angres

/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/20260521_Korvette_Karlsruhe.m4v

[42,486,50,51

post-55038","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-headlines","category-sicherheitspolitik-news","category-streitkraefte-news
["GET
