The C-27J Spartan from the Italian defence company Leonardo (formerly Alenia) is a robust medium military multipurpose transport aircraft with short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities that is flown in 20 countries worldwide. Saudi Arabia has now ordered a mission-specific maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) version of this transporter for the first time. The first of the four examples, which may already be equipped with torpedo armament and depth charges as well as sea target FK, is to be delivered to Riyadh in 2029.<\/p>\n
Before that happens, the C-27 will already be flying on the Arabian Peninsula - as a civilian firefighting aircraft, ordered by a subsidiary of the Saudi oil group Aramco. The US Coast Guard also already operates the C-27J in the maritime role - albeit without armament.
