On 7 April, the German Navy's sail training ship left its home port of Kiel to embark on a major overseas training voyage (AAR). The Gorch Fock is travelling across the Atlantic to celebrate 250 years of independence in the United States. Stops on the voyage include Bayonne (France), Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Spain), Hamilton (Bermuda), Norfolk, Baltimore and New York (USA) as well as Halifax (Canada) and Reykjavik (Iceland). The arrival in New York on 4 July to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States and the reunion with the sister ships as part of the \"Five Sisters Trophy\" from New York to Boston are the highlight of the voyage.<\/p>\n

Captain Elmar Bornkessel sent his greetings via messenger: \u201eWe have now travelled over 2300 nautical miles, with around 900 miles to go to Bermuda. The last few days we have been sailing quickly in a stable trade wind around 20 knots, mostly under full sail in excellent conditions. As of today we are on a north-westerly course, heading directly for Bermuda - the Bermuda Triangle already in sight and on the electronic chart,\u201c he wrote this morning with a wink. Greetings back from the editorial team! We are proud of you and admittedly quite envious...<\/p>\n

The <\/span>Five Sisters Trophy<\/strong> is a sailing regatta with the sister ships of the \"Gorch Fock\", first held in 1976 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the USA. The still sailing four remaining, almost identical sailing ships are the \"Gorch Fock\", the US Coast Guard \"Eagle\", the Portuguese \"Sagres\" and the Romanian \"Mircea\". The fifth sister ship, the first Gorch Fock, is a museum in Stralsund.<\/span><\/div>\n
