The <strong>Kilo class<\/strong> (Project 877\/636) already comprises 24 boats with a fairly equal distribution between the three fleets, with the first boats already looking back on forty years of service. At the end of October, the \"Wolkow\", the second boat of the third batch (Project 636.3), a series of six units destined for the Pacific Fleet, was handed over to the Far Eastern command.<\/p>\n<p>The boats are built by the United Shipbuilding Corporation, an offshoot of Admirality Shipyards in St Petersburg. While the second boat took well over three years to build and test, the first boat in the series, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, took just two and a half years from keel laying to commissioning. That was a clear statement that could probably not be repeated for the Volkov. Models three and four are to be launched at the beginning to middle of next year.
