This time he captured RSS Invincible during sea trials in the Baltic Sea in rough weather. It is the first 218SG class boat for the Republic of Singapore Navy to be tested in winter conditions. The boat, which was christened in early 2019, is scheduled for delivery in 20121.

RSS Invincible during tests in the rough Baltic Sea

The Invincible is the first in a series of four 218SG submarines to be built by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in Kiel. The contract for the first two submarines was signed in 2013 and the contract for the second batch in 2017. The order volume is estimated at around three billion euros. Following the handover of the Invincible, the second submarine is scheduled for delivery in 2022. Submarines three and four are scheduled to follow in 2024.

The Type 218SG is a further development of the Type 214. The submarine is around 70 metres long, displaces around 2,000 tonnes and is therefore significantly larger than the Type 212A. Its special feature is an air-independent propulsion system (AIP) consisting of an electric motor, a diesel generator, a fuel cell generator and a battery. The AIP enables uninterrupted, submerged operation of the submarine for several weeks.

The boats are designed for a low signature and feature numerous customised solutions and new technologies. These include a new command and weapon control system developed by ST Electronics (Singapore) and ATLAS ELEKTRONIK to meet the requirements of the Singapore Navy.

Text: Heiming / Schlüter; Mittler Verlag

Photos: Michael Nitz, http://naval-press-service.de/

Und wieder einmal überrascht uns Michael Nitz mit aktuellen Bildern.
