It consists of lowering and raising the national flag. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Merchant ships are obliged to give the first salute to warships of all states. The dipping salute is not given between warships because it is derived from the striking of the sails (or striking the flag; handing the ship over to the enemy), the sign of subordination and submission.
