This took place as part of the Freedom of Navigation Operations (Fonops) proclaimed by the United States. The USA is thus emphasising its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and at the same time taking a stand against China's policy of claiming large parts of the South China Sea as its territory.
China's reaction was not long in coming. The spokesman for the eastern PLA command, Colonel Zhang Chunhui, announced in writing that "China strongly opposes this". The behaviour of the US ship sends the wrong signal. America was thus interfering in the regional situation without justification and damaging peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. During the passage, the PLA Eastern Theatre Command was on alert and closely monitored the movements of the destroyer.

USS John Finn

The USS John Finn is a destroyer of the Arleigh-Burke-class and belongs to Flight II A.
