Vice Admiral Linda L. Fagan, currently commander of the Pacific Area, has been nominated by the White House to succeed Admiral Charles W. Ray. She will become the first female four-star admiral when she takes office on 18 June, the Coast Guard announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

Admiral Karl L. Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, said in the statement that Fagan was \"an outstanding supervisor with 36 years of operational experience\" in the Coast Guard, and also had outstanding policy and interagency knowledge.<\/p>\n

In her current position, Fagan is responsible for Coast Guard operations from the Rocky Mountains to the east coast of Africa. Under Fagan's leadership, the USCG has expanded its presence in the Western Pacific in the face of growing threats from China and North Korea. During Fagan's tenure, the Coast Guard began deploying its newest units (\"Fast Response Cutters\") to Guam to curb illegal Chinese fishing in the region.<\/p>\n
