Bei der Entwicklung von Hyperschallwaffen hinken die amerikanischen Streitkräfte den Russen hinterher. Für die Jagdbomber der Navy wurde nun ein Entwicklungsprogramm angestoßen. Die US Navy beauftragte am 27. März die konkurrierenden Firmen Raytheon und Lockheed Martin mit der Entwicklung eines flugzeugträgertauglichen Hyperschallmarschflugkörpers zur Bekämpfung von Seezielen. Das Entwicklungsprogramm trägt die Bezeichnung Hypersonic Air-Launched Offensive Anti-Surface Warfare Weapon oder kurz Halo. Halo soll nicht direkt vom Schiff aus, sondern von trägergestützten Jagdflugzeugen, insbesondere von der F/A-18E/F, eingesetzt werden. On 14 June 1848, the National Assembly in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt am Main decided to establish an all-German navy. This was done to protect the German merchant fleet and was justified by the Schleswig-Holstein War against Denmark. This makes the German Navy the oldest branch of the German Armed Forces.
