Der Auftrag zum Bau von drei Schiffen des Typs Meko 200PN wurde 1985 unterzeichnet. Kiellegung für das Typschiff, die „Vasco da Gama“, war am 2. Februar 1989, der Stapellauf erfolgte am 26.
