Nuclear submarines: USA and Australia strengthen co-operation

The Australian Navy is not due to receive nuclear-powered submarines until the 2030s. However, the training of the first soldiers is already underway.

As part of the Aukus (Australia, United Kingdom, United States) agreement agreed in 2021, Australia is to acquire nuclear-powered fighter submarines with the help of the USA and the UK. The first boat is to be handed over to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) at the end of the 2030s. To bridge this waiting period, Washington wants to sell VIRGINIA-class fighter submarines to Australia at the beginning of the next decade.
