The GERMAN MARITIME INSTITUTE has a new President - Vice Admiral Hans-Joachim Stricker has handed over his office to Rear Admiral (ret.) Karsten Schneider. At its board meeting on 4 June 2021, the full board of the GERMAN MARITIME INSTITUTE appointed retired Rear Admiral Karsten Schneider as its new president. Schneider succeeds retired Vice Admiral Hans-Joachim Stricker, who headed the DMI as President for a total of nine years. Stricker has continuously advanced the DMI during his presidency. The die is cast. The BMVg has decided in favour of the P-8A Poseidon from Boeing to replace the German Navy's ageing P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft. A parliamentary referral is to take place before the summer break in order to avoid a looming capability gap at the last minute. The replacement procurement had become necessary after the ongoing extensive modernisation of the P-3C fleet was halted last year due to escalating costs.
