The Indo -Pacific - Association has reached another highlight of its journey. The frigate "Baden-Württemberg" and the task force provider "Frankfurt am Main" have been travelling as part of Operation Indo-Pacific Deployment since May. After harbour visits in Halifax and New York, the Panama Canal was crossed with destination San Diego. Following the stay in Pearl Harbor, Japan has now been reached. The participation in the RIMPAC manoeuvre together with the German Air Force has been completed, now the actual core of the operation begins. Since merchant ships in the Red Sea have been repeatedly attacked by the Yemeni Houthi militia, demonstrating their support for the militant Palestinian Hamas in their fight against Israel, the number of ship passages has fallen from 25,911 in the 2022/2023 financial year to 20,148 in 2023/2024, according to the head of the Egyptian Canal Authority. The Suez Canal's annual revenue fell by over 23 per cent from 8.55 billion euros to 6.55 billion euros in the last financial year, which ends in June, as various shipping companies and shippers switched to alternative routes. A video was recorded from the M/V "Pumba" in the Red Sea showing how an attack by a drone boat loaded with explosives (USV - unmanned surface vehicle) was repelled. The armed security team deployed on board the "Pumba" opened fire on the USV, causing it to explode at a sufficient distance from the stern. Red Sea: Damaged submarine cables are being repaired

More than a dozen underwater cables have been laid through the Red Sea. At least three of them were probably severed by the anchor of a cargo ship attacked by the Houthi militias. On 18 February 2024, two anti-ship missiles were fired at the bulk carrier "Rubymar" (171 metres, 19,000 tonnes), one of which hit the ship and caused severe damage. The ship sank on 2 March. The Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) has signed a memorandum of understanding for co-operation with Denmark and Greenland to collect new data on seabed minerals.
