Summer visit to the polar bears

While the thermometers in Central Europe are showing summer heat, the British research vessel Protector has set an icy record. Never before has a Royal Navy ship travelled further north than 80° 41.5' N. To be fair, this does not include submarines, which pass under the perpetual ice and then break through the ice cover when they surface at a suitable point. The Protector has now come within 1050 kilometres of the North Pole to collect data on the ocean and the environment. Fleet service boats: the navy's flash order

No sooner had the Defence and Budget Committees decided on the extensive procurement of defence equipment for the navy yesterday (Wednesday) than the first contract was signed. As announced by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, the Lürssen shipyard has been commissioned to design and build three Class 424 fleet service boats. In addition, a training and reference facility for this system is to be built. Like the existing fleet service boats, the new Class 423 units will be designed according to civilian standards. This should save costs and development time. The planners envisage the first commissioning of the new ships as early as 2027....

A few fair weather clouds drift leisurely across the sky in the north of the UK as Lady Alison Johnstone enters the small speaker's platform. She is President of the Scottish Parliament and godmother of HMS Spey, which is being commissioned on this day. The offshore patrol vessel belongs to the second tranche of the River class, Batch 2, as it is known in the Royal Navy. The Spey was built by BAE Systems in Glasgow, Scotland, as the fifth and final ship in the series. Named after a river that meanders through the Cairngorms National Park around 40 kilometres south of Invergordon, it is now being built in the small harbour town of...
