New minesweepers for Belgium

Still smart from the front, but like a cockchafer from the side! The first mine defence platform of the Belgian-Dutch joint project rMCM, the Belgian "Oostende", was sighted in open sea for the first time in mid-July. The sea trials off Concarneau in southern Brittany initially focussed on the propulsion and navigation systems. The bilateral rMCM programme as a cooperation between Belgium Naval & Robotics (Naval Group and Exail) and Kership (Piriou and Naval Group) - with the latter as general contractor - is actually a trilateral project, as France has already expressed its interest. No surprise, since all the plans are available in Paris. For the first time, this mine defence platform will be able to fly, float and dive...

Argentina closes capability gaps

On 3 September, the first of the four Norwegian Orion P-3C maritime patrol aircraft finally arrived in South America after being refurbished in the USA. Two weeks later, on 19 September, the maritime patrol aircraft with the new registration 6-P-57 was handed over to the Argentine Navy in Buenos Aires. As there is currently no long-range capable aircraft type available there, this capability - especially in conjunction with the Raytheon AN/APS-137 Synthetic Aperture Radar (contour recognition through multiple surveying of the target) - is eagerly awaited in order to maintain surveillance of Argentina's immense economic zone in the South Atlantic. The Orions will be sensibly stationed at the Almirante Zar naval air base in Trelew, halfway between...

Delayed and too expensive

The US Navy's ship procurement programme is several years behind schedule. At the same time, costs are exploding. The government announces targeted measures. It has long been known that most US naval shipbuilding projects are behind schedule. The Navy's ocean-going fleet currently has fewer than 300 units, including fleet supply ships. The Pentagon estimates that 381 units would be needed to fulfil all of the Navy's global commitments. New construction instead of regeneration

The Class 404 tenders were designed for use in the Baltic Sea and were operated almost worldwide. Due to the constantly increasing requirements, it is time to develop a successor. It is not only since the current conflicts and the dramatic changes that have accompanied them that the utilisation management at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has been faced with the daily challenge of meeting changing requirements in terms of military, technical and operational aspects. And this is done during ongoing operations and with the aim of guaranteeing optimum availability of the units. These challenges are illustrated using the Class 404 tender as an...

From the Indo-Pacific to the Baltic Sea, everything is connected

China and Russia are at the forefront of maritime aggression worldwide. Germany's interests are also affected. Shipping and geopolitics have always been intertwined. With this in mind, leading representatives from politics and the maritime industry used unusually clear words to focus the attention of the latest SMM on social defence, resilience and competitiveness. While the majority of major European shipowners are now avoiding the Red Sea, Chinese-owned vessels are increasingly sailing here. Trade patterns in the region have changed almost overnight since the Yemeni Houthi attacks began. Just as the war in Ukraine was not caused by the conflict...
