Singapore: a city state with an impressive navy

Thanks to a prospering economy, small Singapore can afford a sizeable maritime defence force. And it has further ambitions. The island city-state of Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia in terms of area. The multi-ethnic state - officially known as the Republic of Singapore - has an area of 734.3 square kilometres. It has a population of around 5.9 million and is economically and technologically advanced. With a per capita gross domestic product of around USD 133,000 in 2023, Singapore ranks third in the world. Northern Coasts 2023: Strengthening the Baltic Sea Region together!

In September, the naval exercise Northern Coasts 2023 took place in the Baltic Sea - the exercise was planned and led from the naval command by the German Maritime Forces Staff - Deu Marfor for short. It was a grey September morning when the screens in the operations centre of the naval command were switched off. Every joint of the red brick building, which towers over the fjord in the east of the city of Flensburg, is brimming with historical references. After all, not only have all officers of the German navy been trained at this training centre since 1910 for their service in the...

Carrier in mini format

The San Giorgio class has enriched the Italian navy for three decades. Replacements are not to be procured until the 1930s. In addition to the two aircraft carriers Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cavour, the Italian Navy operates three smaller amphibious units of the San Giorgio class, which can be deployed in a variety of ways. Two ships - the San Giorgio and the San Marco - were put into service with the Marina Militare in 1988/89. A third ship with a slightly modified design named San Giusto followed in 1994. With dimensions of 133 metres in length, 20.5 metres in width, a draught of 5.25 metres and a displacement of around 8000 tonnes when fully loaded, the San Giorgio class ships are very...

The same procedure as every year?

Dinner for two! A British and a German officer call for more participation in the dialogue. The publication of the declaration of intent by the Inspector of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jan C. Kaack, sparked a discussion between two officers. With the intention of promoting the exchange of opinions and "forcing" young officers into public dialogue, they are making a start by writing down this discussion and hope that many will follow.
