The fight against drug smuggling: a worthwhile mission in the Caribbean

The HNLMS Holland has only been in the Caribbean since May, but the results are already impressive. At the end of last week, the crew was able to stop drug smugglers twice from bringing their valuable cargo to the USA. In the first case, a suspicious speedboat was discovered on Friday. As it did not stop despite radio calls, the two Dutch fast response boats were launched. Although they were able to catch up with the smuggler boat, they were initially unable to bring it to a halt. Japan-US co-operation in the Pacific

The Japanese landing ship Shimokita was able to train with US units for two days. In the Philippine Sea, the 8900-ton displacement Osumi-class ship joined the Americans to practice various manoeuvres and procedures on a binational level. On the first day, the lead ship, the USS America, conducted cross-deck transfers with the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and tactical manoeuvres. A hovercraft (LCAC) from the USS New Orleans successfully entered the well deck of the Shimokita, and in return the Japanese LCAC made a detour to the USS Germantown. At the end, the opportunity for a photex was not to be missed. The three participating US amphibious ships...

Corvette Braunschweig on UN mission

Due to the pandemic-related situation, the departure took place in private and without ceremony. The commander of the 1st Corvette Squadron, Frigate Captain Florian Feld (45), explained: "It was with a heavy heart that we decided to take this step. However, the safety of all involved has the highest priority".
In addition to the German blue helmets, ships and boats from Brazil, Greece, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Turkey are also involved in the UN mission in the Mediterranean. The main task of the marines will be maritime surveillance. This also includes co-operation with the Lebanese authorities and training the Lebanese navy in coastal protection. Since the beginning of the year, the entire naval unit has been under the German command of Flotilla Admiral Axel Schulz.
At the end of October, the "Bravo" crew will be relieved by the "Charlie" crew and return to Warnemünde. The corvette "Braunschweig", on the other hand, will remain in the eastern Mediterranean.
