Points of view: The Bundeswehr abides by law and order!

A letter to the editor on the topic of defence administration The bureaucratisation in the military administration and troops addressed by Dieter Stockfisch in his article "Improve operational capability!" (marineforum 3-2021) is indisputable. The bureaucratisation of military administration and troops is undeniable. Therefore, approaches to examine the existing processes in procurement and the use of defence equipment in terms of their usefulness and efficiency are to be welcomed in principle. However, the article makes a number of statements that are factually incorrect and in some cases demonstrate a questionable understanding of the constitution and the law, which is why we would like to take this opportunity to provide some clarification: The current international rules and conventions on shipping (e.g. Solas, Marpol) do not apply to warships. Turn seven into four

As Finland turns to the West, it is also modernising its maritime armed forces. The small country is spending a lot of money on this. From a strategic military perspective, Finland is a country of extremes. With only 5.5 million inhabitants on 338,465 square kilometres, the country is relatively sparsely populated and the population is also distributed quite unevenly across the country, with a clear population focus in the south. The 1250 kilometre long...

The billion-euro loss

The Bonhomme Richard was not the first US Navy ship to fall victim to the flames. Has the navy learnt anything from the incident? In a four-day fire in July 2020, the 22-year-old ship was so badly damaged that it was not worth repairing, the US Navy determined back in the autumn. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The original suspicion that the fire was started deliberately by a crew member has so far been neither confirmed nor ruled out. Cleanly measured - BSH measures the proportion of sulphur in ship emissions

The BSH has been measuring the proportion of sulphur in ship emissions since 2014. At the end of 2020, the measuring network consisted of three fixed and one mobile station as well as the new measuring station on the Atair. The maximum permissible limit for the proportion of sulphur in marine fuels has been 0.5 percent worldwide since 1 January 2020. The limit value of 0.1 per cent has already applied to the North Sea and Baltic Sea as a Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) since 1 January 2015. SECAs are special shipping zones with particularly low sulphur limits set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). With the reduction of the sulphur concentration in the...
