Three all-rounders

All core mine defence capabilities are combined on the 332CL class boats. The refit is a good example of successful co-operation between the navy and industry. Following the introduction of ten Frankenthal-class (332A) minehunting boats and the conversion of ten Hameln-class boats into five Ensdorf-class (352) and five Kulmbach-class (333) boats, the German Navy has had three different systems for naval mine warfare since 2001. A fourth variant was introduced with the conversion of two Class 332A minehunting boats into pure Class 332B minehunter patrol boats. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user? Fast boats, slow procurement

The soldiers of the sea battalion and KSM are still waiting for a decision from politicians on the purchase of new combat boats. Yet their value is undisputed. Hans-Uwe Mergener Multi-dimensional naval warfare includes amphibious operations. An indispensable prerequisite for this is the availability of suitable means of transport for the soldiers. Operational vehicles for the naval battalion and the naval special forces command (KSM) have therefore been on the naval command's wish list for a long time. However, as with other current Bundeswehr procurement projects, little is currently happening here. Reason enough for the marineforum to take a look at the current state of affairs. Between theory and application

Only eight frigates and five supply vessels are currently available for operational duties in EF 2. Optimisation of exercise periods and virtual training help to train crews efficiently. With the reorganisation of Europe following the end of the East-West conflict, the German Navy and its partners were increasingly tasked with maintaining and re-establishing order at the external maritime borders of the European and Atlantic community of values as early as the beginning of the 1990s. The fight against international terrorism, the presence on the Levantine coast and finally the missions in connection with the consequences of the Arab Spring inevitably led to a significantly reduced fleet...

The fate of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis

In recent years, a whole series of warship wrecks from the Second World War have been found in the Pacific, which were lost in the battle between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. Billionaire, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, who died in 2018, had financially supported the search for such ships. Most of the expeditions sponsored by Allen were conducted from the research vessel Petrel, which also utilised remote-controlled robots. The research team achieved some spectacular successes, including the discovery of the Japanese battle cruiser Hiei and the mighty battleship Musashi, the sister ship of the legendary Yamato, the American aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2)...

Book tip: Arctic conflict zone

Joachim Weber (ed.): Konfliktraum Arktis. Die Großmächte und der Hohe Norden, Miles Verlag, 19.80 euros, ISBN 978-3-96776-023-1 This book is dedicated to great power conflicts in the Arctic. Joachim Weber is by no means a stranger to German-language Arctic and maritime policy studies, having edited an English-language handbook on geopolitics in the High North at the Institute for Security Policy Kiel (ISPK) between 2017 and 2020. His swiftly published second work is shorter, more concise and altogether more manageable - and should find a broad readership, not least for this reason. The editor, who is also responsible for four of the seven chapters, begins with an introduction to the conflict dynamics in the North.
