Focus on the Mediterranean

Even in turbulent times, Spain relies on a strong military alliance to meet maritime challenges. An interview with the inspector of the Spanish Navy, Admiral Antonio Martorell Lacave. Mr Admiral, first of all, congratulations on your new position! It is a great honour for us to interview you. The German Navy also has a new chief, when will you see Admiral Schönbach? We have both just taken office and we have countless commitments ahead of us. However, I hope to have the opportunity to meet him soon, as Germany is an important ally in NATO and the EU. Our...

Spain's pride

The Spanish navy has a wide range of capabilities. Many classes are national in-house developments with export potential. The Armada Española is one of the oldest navies in the world. It has existed since the end of the 15th century and is now the fifth largest navy in NATO after the navies of the USA, Great Britain, France and Italy. Its most important units include the Galerna-class submarines, the Alvaro de Bazan- and Santa Maria-class frigates, the Meteoro- and Serviola-class patrol vessels and the Segura-class minesweepers, as well as the Galicia, Castilla and Juan Carlos I amphibious support units. With the Patiño and Cantabria supply ships, the Spanish naval forces also have a significant naval defence force.

The master panel builders from Lichtenau

Many of the German Navy's missions are characterised by an asymmetric threat. Modern protection systems promise security. In this environment, naval units are exposed to a variety of threats during operations in coastal waters, straits or harbours. In addition to traditional threats, the ships are particularly exposed to asymmetric and hybrid threats. Asymmetric threats have become increasingly serious since the end of the 1990s. This was demonstrated above all by the attack on the destroyer USS Cole on 12 October 2000 in the port of Aden. While...

Three all-rounders

All core mine defence capabilities are combined on the 332CL class boats. The refit is a good example of successful co-operation between the navy and industry. Following the introduction of ten Frankenthal-class (332A) minehunting boats and the conversion of ten Hameln-class boats into five Ensdorf-class (352) and five Kulmbach-class (333) boats, the German Navy has had three different systems for naval mine warfare since 2001. A fourth variant was introduced with the conversion of two Class 332A minehunting boats into pure Class 332B minehunter patrol boats. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user?
