Five in one go

Splashing out instead of splashing out! On 5 November, the Bangladesh Navy commissioned five ships in one go at its Chattogram base in Chittagong. In addition to the two JIANGWEI-II class frigates (Type 053H3) taken over from China, the newbuild corvette PROTASHA of the SHADHINOTA class, which was built in Wuhan, was also given its flag, colours and banner. The two frigates, which are actually just over twenty years old, were contracted in June 2018, overhauled in China and transferred to the Bay of Bengal a year ago with their no longer quite so new weapon systems - they now bear the names UMAR FAROOQ and ABU UBAIDAH. Commander ... of an aircraft carrier!

While Corvette Captain Gilda Prüß became the first woman to hold the position of chief officer on a German Navy frigate last year (see MarineForum 12-2020 page 45), America is already a few steps ahead. Shortly before Christmas, the US Navy proudly announced that a woman will take command of the aircraft carrier USS "Abraham Lincoln" next summer. Captain Amy Bauernschmidt will then command one of the Navy's eleven nuclear-powered carriers and up to 5,600 men and women. With their 85 aircraft, the 332-metre-long ships form the combat-ready backbone of the fleet. The "Abraham Lincoln"...

On the way to operational readiness

After the Breguet Atlantic was discontinued, the German Navy opted for second-hand P-3Cs from the Dutch. France, on the other hand, decided to develop its own successor, the Atlantic 2. Also known as the Atlantic Nouvelle Generation (ANG), these maritime patrol aircraft differed from their predecessors only in the details. However, after 20 years in service, the technical equipment was no longer up to date and the decision was made to upgrade in 1993. Just under two years ago, the first of the converted aircraft rejoined the fleet. On the way to their planned retirement at the end of 2021...

New maritime strategy of the USA

An anticipated Christmas present or the last attempt by a voted-out government to hammer in stakes? Either way, the publication of "Advantage at Sea. Prevailing with Integrated All-Domain Naval Power" a few days before the turn of the year and just four weeks before the handover of office from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. Be that as it may, the new US maritime strategy is now the third, after 2007 and 2015, to be drawn up and co-signed by all three maritime branches of the armed forces. The Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard emphasise the self-image of "Warfighting First" - that is nothing less than the perfect...

USA: UFOs over America?

Even after decades, they are still a hot topic, especially when it comes to unsettling news with a coronavirus background: flying saucers in America. Since the beginning of the year, various pieces of information, some more speculative, some less serious, have appeared about sightings of unexplained phenomena (UFOs) by US Navy and Marine jet pilots, primarily in the area of the US East Coast. At the end of April, the Pentagon gave in to media pressure and published three video sequences of such apparitions, recorded from cockpits. But don't expect too much if you look on YouTube or at the Pentagon now, because the released video sequences are not necessarily recent (2007, 2015). In any case, the well-known...
