Seit Montag, 21. Juni 2021 übte die Bundespolizei den Einsatz und das internationale Zusammenwirken von Spezialkräften bei maritimen Gefahrenlagen. Unterstützt wurde sie dabei, wie bereits in den Jahren zuvor, vom Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrografie (BSH). Nach Angaben des russischen Verteidigungsministeriums ist am 23. Juni der britische Zerstörer HMS Defender drei Kilometer weit in die Hoheitsgewässer des Landes eingedrungen. Daraufhin habe ein Grenzschutzschiff Warnschüsse abgegeben und ein Kampfflugzeug vom Typ Su-24M habe Bomben vor das britische Kriegsschiff geworfen. Daraufhin sei es abgedreht und habe die russischen Gewässer verlassen. Der Vorfall ereignete sich kurz nach 12:00 Uhr südlich von Sewastopol im Schwarzen Meer.
