Red Sea: Houthi attack on US destroyer

At around 2.45 p.m. (CET) on 14 January 2024, there was an attack on a US Navy ship in the sea area off Hodeidah. According to reports from US Central Command, the missile fired at the "USS Laboon" (DDG 58, 1st batch, in service since 1995) was intercepted and neutralised by an unidentified US fighter aircraft. There was no evidence of damage to people or material. The missile was fired from a Houthi-controlled area in south-west Yemen. Update: Bosphorus remains closed to warring parties

Ukraine will not be able to participate in the mine clearance operation agreed between the Black Sea navies of Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. As expected, Turkey has told its NATO allies that it will not allow the two minehunting units (M108 HMS "Grimsby" and M112 HMS "Shoreham") handed over to Ukraine by the UK to transit its waters through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits. Turkey is referring to the Montreux Convention, which regulates transit even in times of war. Military coalition against the Houthi in Yemen grows

Other nations have joined the coalition with the United States to send a final warning to the Houthi militant faction in Yemen, which has attacked shipping in the Red Sea several dozen times since November 2023. In addition to the USA, the co-signatories now include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Turkey: Black Sea navies agree on mine clearance

Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria are planning their first major joint operation to clear mines, after each country had previously cleared detected mines on its own. The defence ministers of the three countries are planning a signing ceremony in Istanbul on 11 January. Although the three countries are NATO allies, this is not a NATO operation. Turkey opposes the presence of naval units from other NATO countries in the Black Sea, arguing that they could further fuel tensions in the region.
