At the end of the 1990s, the first three Grigorovich-class frigates were ordered in Russia (project 1135.6, 125 metres, 4,000 tonnes), known as the Talwar class for India. Further batches have since been ordered, so that this class now comprises ten units. At the same time, India developed the three larger Shivalik-class frigates (Project 17, 143 metres, 6,200 tonnes) from this type, which are now being followed by seven Nilgiri-class frigates (Project 17A, 150 metres, 6,700 tonnes). The type ship was only commissioned at the beginning of this year. At the end of August, the Indian Navy simultaneously commissioned two more Nilgiri frigates in Visakhapatnam - "Udaygiri" (F35) and "Himgiri" (F34) - built separately in the Mazagon/Mumbai and Garden Reach/Calcutta shipyards. "Udaygiri" is considered to be the hundredth unit that the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau in New Delhi has independently developed and built nationally, with twenty types ranging from frigates to aircraft carriers. India has thus achieved complete national independence in ship and weapon system construction.
