There is meaningful cooperation between the navies of Germany and France on many levels. However, cooperation is not always easy.
The roots of Franco-German naval cooperation lie in the political establishment of friendship between the two nations after the Second World War. This can now look back on more than 58 years of successful history. On 22 January 1963, French President Charles de Gaulle and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer signed the Elysée Treaty in Paris. This turned the former enemies of two world wars into the most important partners in and for Europe.
