Russian underwater "research vessel" launched

The launch of the "Vitse-Admiral Burilichev" (project 22011, 108 metres, 5,200 tonnes), a research vessel that is, however, subordinate to the Deep Sea Research Department (GUGI) of the Ministry of Defence, took place quietly and just before the Finnish border in Vyborg, far away from any journalistic curiosity. It is from there that anything approaching the communications infrastructure of Western states is guided in order to locate their connecting cables and map them so that they can be manipulated when the time comes. In terms of its design sketch, dimensions and equipment, the "Burilichev" is similar to the notorious "Yantar" (Project 22010). In recent years, under the guise of science and submarine rescue, the latter has increasingly been seen holding positions or carrying out small-scale search and survey patterns in the vicinity of sensitive facilities (submarine cables, strategic bases). Dual use - as it is called today.

  1. Moin,

and as a supplement to project 22010, a sister ship of the "Yantar" ("Янтарь") under the name "Almaz" ("Алмаз") is still under construction in Kaliningrad at the "Shipbuilding Plant Yantar" (PSZ = Pribaltiyskiy sudostroitel'nyy zavod "Yantar" [ПСЗ "Янтарь = Прибалтийский судостроительный завод "Янтарь"]) under construction; the "Almaz" ("Алмаз") is 9.3 metres longer than the "Yantar" ("Янтарь"). The keel was laid on 9 June 2016, the launch took place in June 2019 and since then the "Almaz" has been in the "final outfitting"...

This unit is also under construction for the GUGI, the "Hauptverwaltung Tiefseeforschung".

  2. Moin,

This launch already took place at the end of June 2025, as reported here on 1 July 2025:

The keel laying of the "Vitse-admiral Burilichev" ("Вице-адмирал Буриличев") already took place on 07.02.2021 at the "Vyborg Shipbuilding Plant" (Vyborgskiy SSZ = Vyborgskiy sudostroitelnyy zavod [Выборгский ССЗ = Выборгский судостроительный завод]). There is no sign of any great haste in the construction of this unit...
