In the year of the 175th anniversary of the German Navy, the German Maritime Institute is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It was founded in 1973 as the German Maritime Institute. At the time, dedicated naval officers under their spiritus rector, Flotilla Admiral Alfred "Munki" Schumann, felt that the navy was not being given adequate consideration in discussions about the Bundeswehr. They wanted to bring naval experts together and give them a voice in the security policy debate. Since then, networking and publications have been the tasks of the DMI.
