The at Boeing Defence Australia developed in the state of Queensland MQ-28 Ghost Bat (in German: Ghost bat) is an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) that was developed in close cooperation with the Australian Air Force. The drone is designed for autonomous use and is to be used in future as a so-called "Loyal Wingman"operate together with manned fighter jets.
Following successful flight tests in 2023 - including in the USA - the US Air Force and the US Navy has expressed interest in the MQ-28. In the future, the stealth drone could even be used by deployed from aircraft carriers become.
The centrepiece of the Ghost Bat is a specially developed, AI-supported control systemwhich enables fully autonomous flying. The drone has modular systems: Sensors in the nose and the Weapons loading in an internal bay can be exchanged and customised for specific missions.
The MQ-28 is currently still undergoing intensive testing. However, Australia is planning to have it ready by the end of 2025, ten copies and operationally. At the same time, the drone's AI is being further developed so that it can act as an intelligent wingman with the Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (based on the Boeing 737) and the F-35A Lightning IIcan work together.
Particularly noteworthy: The Ghost Bat is the first military aircraftwhich has been was developed in Australia 50 years ago. The name refers to the bats native to Australia, which are pack hunters - fitting for the future role of the drone in combination with manned aircraft.
