The San Giorgio class has enriched the Italian navy for three decades. A replacement is not to be procured until the 1930s.
In addition to the two aircraft carriers Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cavour, the Italian Navy operates three smaller amphibious units of the San Giorgio class, which can be deployed in a variety of ways. Two ships - the San Giorgio and the San Marco - were put into service with the Marina Militare in 1988/89. A third ship with a slightly modified design named San Giusto followed in 1994.
With dimensions of 133 metres in length, 20.5 metres in width, a draught of 5.25 metres and a displacement of around 8,000 tonnes when fully loaded, the San Giorgio class ships are very compact.
