Olpenitz - Your home harbour

Legend and memories - an appeal! With the development of the German Navy, suitable bases were needed whose location would support the defence of the Baltic Sea approaches. The choice fell on the Noor near Olpenitz, which was separated from the Schlei from 1959 to 1964 and given an entrance into the Baltic Sea. From 1966 to 2006, the harbour was a base for fast patrol boats and minesweepers. There were also workshops, a signalling station and flats in Ellenberg for the soldiers' families. At times, around 2000 soldiers and 450 civilians served here. The naval base, like the weapons school in Ellenberg, was a major economic factor for the region. While...

Full house in Linstow

With the return of politics to national and alliance defence, new tasks arise for the navy. At the DWT naval workshop in Linstow, known problems, particularly in procurement, were highlighted. The DWT organised the naval workshop for the 24th time. Between 19 and 21 September, a platform for dialogue, information and communication was offered to the navy, the public sector, research and industry in Linstow. More than 500 stakeholder representatives accepted the invitation to the Van der Valk Resort Linstow. The participants obviously enjoyed the opportunity to meet in person and exchange expertise with each other....

Evolution of warfare

Commentary In the early 21st century, the nature of war and violence has changed. Fortunately, and thanks to a functioning deterrent, the horror vision of nuclear war has not yet materialised. The era of classic war and major military interventions abroad, such as the recent one in Afghanistan, seems to have come to an end. War has now taken on a new form. This is evidenced not only by the global centres of crisis and conflict, the endless "small wars" in the fight against terror or the civil wars in failed states. These conflicts usually have neither declarations of war nor peace agreements. War and peace are therefore difficult to distinguish. New weapons such as...

Renaissance of naval warfare?

The 21st century is already characterised by maritime issues. The struggle for power and an arms race at sea harbour great potential for escalation. Sea power is back in the headlines - even in Germany. Here, maritime security issues rarely dominate the news. For a globally active industrialised nation that is dependent on maritime transport and still ranks third behind China and the United States in terms of exports, this is remarkable anyway. But it fits in with the shadowy existence of security policy in the attention of the German public. And here the navy is particularly overshadowed. At best, occasional missions against piracy or people smuggling create...

People make clothes

The naval uniform is undoubtedly the most beautiful uniform of all branches of the armed forces. However, procurement via clothing management is not always to the satisfaction of the customer. A medium-sized company is capitalising on this fact. When you are promoted to lieutenant at sea, you become a self-dresser - that's what your employer wants. The employer also has an interest in officers wearing an impeccable uniform to set an example. Various items of uniform must therefore be purchased for a certain budget. In addition, those wearing naval uniforms are granted a monthly clothing allowance, which is 16.36 euros for men and currently 23.01 euros for women. If you go to the opening hours...
