Russian landing ship christened in Kaliningrad

At the end of May, the large landing ship "Vladimir Andreyev" was christened in Kaliningrad at the Yantar shipyard as type ship project 11711M in the presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev. It is a further development of the Ivan Gren class, known for its striking silhouette with the wide projecting carrier bow and the aft island. The new landing ship now resembles the traditional dock landing ships of the American Whidbey class (186 metres, 16,000 tonnes) or the Chinese Yuzhao class (210 metres, 20,000 tonnes), but is significantly smaller than these at 150 metres in length and around 8,000 tonnes displacement. However, as it is 20% larger overall...

Algae from the offshore wind farm

The sea is no longer limitless: researchers want to optimise the use of increasingly scarce space at sea. But technology has yet to play its part. In the past, the sea seemed limitless to many people. Today, space is becoming scarce in some places at sea: merchant ships and the navy, fishing and aquaculture, tourists and water sports enthusiasts, energy producers and nature conservation all need space. Researchers are therefore exploring the multiple utilisation of marine areas. One example is the cultivation of algae and mussels in an offshore wind farm. Chiara Sickert sits next to a cool box containing salt water and twelve green nets. The biology student is wearing a lifejacket over her anorak, a headband and a hood....

Philippines - two frigates for the South China Sea

Philippines: Two new warships for the 127th anniversary of the Philippine Navy Two new ships were officially commissioned to mark the 127th anniversary of the Philippine Navy: The South Korean-built missile frigate "Miguel Malvar" - type ship of a planned duo - and the "Albert Majini", the eighth and first locally manufactured FAIC fast attack interdictor craft (FAIC) of the Nestor Acero class. Both units are part of the urgently needed modernisation programme "Horizon 2" - essential for the maritime security of the archipelago, which consists of over 7,000 islands. The second unit of the Malvar class, "Diego Salang", was already launched in Ulsan (South Korea) at the end of March and is expected to remain there until...

Nigerian guard boats now clear for the Gulf of Guinea

The guard boats delivered in December to reinforce the Nigerian Patrol Forces were christened and commissioned in the presence of distinguished guests on the occasion of the 69th naval birthday at the Beecroft base in Apapa opposite Lagos Island. The two new Sea Eagle boats (38 metres, 190 tonnes) built in Malaysia and purchased by Singapore and another smaller guard boat of the over 40-year-old Chamsuri class (37 metres, 150 tonnes) provided by South Korea now bear the names "Shere", "Faro" and "Ikogosi". Together with three newly acquired AW109 Trekker helicopters, the Patrol Forces will support the country's endeavours to combat piracy, oil theft and illegal fishing in the national seas.

New Zealand runs out of helicopters

The Ministry of Defence in Wellington has decided not to rely on civilian helicopters, as was initially the case, but on proven military models such as the NH90, AW159 Wildcat, MH-60R Seahawk or a modified Bell 412. Only five of the former eight Kaman SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters from the ten helicopters actually manufactured for Australia (Australia pulled out of the construction contract in 2008 due to time and cost overruns) are still operational, and even these should be retired by the end of 2028. They fly as on-board helicopters for the two ANZAC frigates (MEKO 200), the two Otago OPVs and the "Canterbury" (multi-purpose landing ship). As the New Zealand Air Force already operates nine NH90s...
