Five demands from the navy to the industry

The war in Ukraine continues to dominate the agenda of the German armed forces and navy. At the 26th Naval Workshop in Linstow, procurement times took centre stage as a decisive factor. From 23 to 25 September, experts from the navy, industry and research met at the German Society for Defence Technology's naval workshop under the motto "War capability - what does that mean for us?" You can tell how times are changing by the headlines. In 2022, the title "Thinking about the future of utilisation: material operational readiness and future viability of the fleet" did not yet reflect Chancellor Olaf Scholz's turnaround government declaration. Not so at the 2023 anniversary conference, when the...

Icebreaker on dry land

In more than 40 years, the research vessel "Polarstern" has travelled almost two million nautical miles. In the dock, the icebreaker shows off its dents and its inner workings. Temperatures in double figures below zero, metre-thick ice, thousands of nautical miles from home: the federally owned research vessel "Polarstern" is built for extremes. Time and again, it sets course for the Arctic and Antarctic so that scientists can conduct research there. Between two expeditions, the "Polarstern" had to go to the shipyard in Bremerhaven in the spring. There she showed her dents, but also what she is made of. Four engines with a total of around 20,000 hp, a helicopter hangar, underfloor heating for outside and a swimming pool...

Severed

The attacks on the Nordstream pipelines at the latest have highlighted the vulnerability of underwater infrastructure. The West must therefore invest more in protecting and securing these vital links. At a time of geopolitical tensions with attacks on critical underwater infrastructure, seabed warfare has become highly topical. It aims to protect critical underwater infrastructure such as submarine cables, pipelines, telephone and internet lines, power lines and oil rigs - an enormous challenge given the vast sea areas and laying depths. Until the Nordstream pipelines in the Baltic Sea were blown up in 2022, the Balticconnector gas pipeline was damaged and a data cable between Estonia and Finland was interrupted in 2023, little thought had been given to hybrid sabotage attacks....

Nordholz waits for Poseidon

Despite an upgrade of the P-3C that has since been cancelled, its ability to hunt submarines is assured. This is because the navy is expecting the first P-8A Poseidon aircraft as early as next year. The Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) make a significant contribution to the capability of long-range reconnaissance at sea and long-range anti-submarine defence from the air and therefore remain indispensable for the German Navy. As with many other major projects of the Air Division of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), the P-8A Poseidon procurement programme is also embedded in a multinational complex. For this reason, following the parliamentary discussion, the Bundeswehr...

Tokyo - Japanese minesweeper sunk after fire

The US and Japanese navies planned to conduct joint mine-clearing exercises last week until a fire broke out on the JS "Ukushima" (Sugashima-class, MSC-686) on 10 November 2024. The ship was on its way to the joint exercise, according to a spokesperson for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force on Tuesday. The fire broke out on Sunday morning in the waters around 1 ½ miles north of the island of Oshima (Fukuoka Prefecture), which belongs to Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands.
