Close at hand

Comment 50 years ago now, a journey began that not only influenced the course of our German Navy - and later the German Navy - but also strengthened the connection between active and former naval officers through a unique medium - our marineforum. Today, in 2024, we proudly look back on half a century of commitment, discussion and professional exchange. This anniversary not only marks a milestone for marineforum itself, but also for the German Maritime Institute as its publisher, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Annual Report 2023: The force continues to age and shrink

The 2023 Annual Report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces identifies major deficits, particularly in the area of personnel. In contrast, a positive trend continues in the area of equipment. In her 175-page Annual Report 2023 on the state of the Bundeswehr, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Eva Högl, also draws a sobering conclusion: "The force is ageing and shrinking. Several units have large personnel vacancies. There is a lack of material, from large equipment to spare parts. The shortage has become even worse as a result of the transfer to Ukraine. The infrastructure is disastrous in many places". The armed forces are therefore "not yet fully operational, there is an enormous need for action," concludes Högl. Access marineforum digital+ You...

The traditional shipyard on the Weser - motto: The art of shipbuilding - is an advertising customer, readership and companion. All the columns and articles that dealt with mine countermeasures units in 500 issues were somehow also about Abeking & Rasmussen. And when the editorial team needed specialist support, every piece of research was handled here in Lemwerder. Time to visit our friends on the Weser again. A warm welcome from CEO Matthias Hellmann, born in 1970, former bank manager and strategy consultant. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user? Now...

We are not playing the cards right

"Personnel shortage in the Bundeswehr!", "Things are looking bleak!" That's what you read everywhere. A reason to visit the head of the Wilhelmshaven career centre. Frigate Captain Christian Clausing can be found at Rheinstraße 47, an old naval address in Wilhelmshaven. Wide corridors, typical Bundeswehr notice boards, well-known navy pictures and a friendly atmosphere. The interviewer is also in a good mood, although terms such as a shortage of applicants and a shortage of skilled labour should actually make you expect a serious face. But Clausing has long been familiar with the field, having been a personnel officer in Operational Flotilla 2 before his time as Commander of Karlsruhe, and he thinks of solutions and speaks plainly.
