Charles French: Belated honour for a hero

The American sailor Charles French saved the lives of fifteen comrades in 1942. It was not until 80 years later that his heroic deed received the recognition it deserved. In the early hours of 5 September 1942, Japanese warships sank the American troopship USS Gregory near the Solomon Island of Guadalcanal. A life raft with 16 survivors drifts towards a Japanese-occupied island without propulsion or rudder. Ensign Robert Adrian warns his men of the imminent capture. Sailor Charles J. French, the only raft occupant who is not wounded, spontaneously takes off his uniform and ties a rope around his waist. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user?...

The future of the German Navy: The sum of the whole

Commentary ... is more than stringing individual pearls on a string. This was on our minds as we tried to put things in order with regard to the German Navy and the upcoming challenges (international situation, development of the defence budget and recruitment). On the one hand, you often find new ideas in old files, and on the other, the course must be charted for the long term - regardless of sudden and abrupt changes in the weather. Bold suggestions - even on these pages - often fail in the face of reality. "There is a time for everything", as the saying goes. Today, a "stabilisation frigate" would no longer be launched; whether in...

Powder keg Red Sea

For a long time, the Yemeni Houthi rebels received little attention in the Western press. As a result of their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, the deployment of the frigate Hessen has become the centre of attention. In connection with the Gaza war, the Houthi rebels have been attacking shipping in the Red Sea since November 2023. The attacks were carried out using drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAVs), missiles (Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles, ASCMs, e.g. anti-ship missiles such as the C-802 Sardine), ballistic missiles (Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles, ASBMs), unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and boarding parties from boats. In response to these attacks, the USA began...

"Because we love all this shit"

Naval officers and guests met for the 63rd time at the Historical Tactical Conference. Host Vice Admiral Lenski came up with a few innovations and surprises. There was snow in Linstow, but otherwise the Naval Historical and Tactical Conference (HiTaTa) began as usual: with long queues in front of the reception, which the attendees happily and warmly used as an opportunity to greet each other. And who came? The "who's who" of the German Navy of course, the double-gold oak leaves almost complete, illustrious guests and traditionally the representatives of the institutions that accompany and support the Navy, including - for 50 years, by the way - the marineforum. The...

Carrier in mini format

The San Giorgio class has enriched the Italian navy for three decades. Replacements are not to be procured until the 1930s. In addition to the two aircraft carriers Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cavour, the Italian Navy operates three smaller amphibious units of the San Giorgio class, which can be deployed in a variety of ways. Two ships - the San Giorgio and the San Marco - were put into service with the Marina Militare in 1988/89. A third ship with a slightly modified design named San Giusto followed in 1994. With dimensions of 133 metres in length, 20.5 metres in width, a draught of 5.25 metres and a displacement of around 8000 tonnes when fully loaded, the San Giorgio class ships are very...
