Sweden's refocus on national defence

Many nations are taking part in the Swedish exercise Aurora 2023. Deu Marfor is taking over the command of NATO maritime units. Totalförsvar was the motto of the Swedish exercise Aurora 23 and means nothing less than total defence. Sweden gave expression to this term with the largest defence exercise on its own territory for 30 years, which took place from 24 April to 11 May. In total, more than 26,000 men and women took part. Totalförsvar is an integral part of the national defence plan, which sets out the cooperation between the military and civilian authorities and organisations in the event of a defence situation. Two plus X?

In the presence of Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius, TKMS has started building the new submarine class 212CD. The navy is already hoping for a follow-up. When the contract for the U 212CD project was signed on 8 July 2021, the Navy was still cautious: construction of the first submarine of the new class could begin in 2023. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Norwegian counterpart Björn Arild Gram were the guests of honour. Access...

Size counts

India sees itself as an up-and-coming nation and is becoming increasingly self-confident. This is also reflected in the country's maritime ambitions. India, a nuclear power, is single-mindedly expanding its navy. In addition to destroyers, frigates, corvettes and submarines, the armament and modernisation programme also includes aircraft carriers and strategic submarines. India's navy, which has long seen itself as a strong blue water navy capable of far-reaching operations, is thus growing into a regional maritime power in Southeast Asia and is striving for supremacy in the Indian Ocean. Attention, contemporary witnesses!

The Historical-Tactical Conference of the Navy (HiTaTa) includes all kinds of well-practised procedures. These include the fact that the debate after the presentations is opened and determined by the former flag officers seated at the very front of the room. Meanwhile, the majority of the participants who are younger in life and rank seem to follow Bernard Wicki's lesson, according to which, as in the cinema, it may be flickering at the front, but the best seats are at the back. And indeed, many a speaker on the podium will find themselves confronted or even trumped by the memories of contemporary witnesses, especially when these are presented with the verve of a knowledgeable expert and in the style of the highest seniority. A favourite, if...
