Saab relies on autonomous systems

Artificial intelligence and improved data transmission will enable the use of autonomous systems at sea in the near future. The increasing problem of inadequate recruitment of qualified personnel is fuelling this development. In an interview in early 2024, Vice Admiral Jan C. Kaack, Chief of Naval Operations, commented on naval warfare in the Baltic Sea: "How are we preparing for the future in this battlefield? In our Marine 2035+ course, we're going for unmanned systems [...] especially for such opponents near the coast, with a high threat, short distances and in a complex environment. And then we have many small units, we call this Future Combat Surface...

More flexibility in assistance

The US Navy is introducing a new class of hospital ship. The new units are smaller, faster and more manoeuvrable than the previous US hospital ships. In December 2023, the US Navy awarded Austal the contract for the construction of three hospital ships of the new Bethesda class. The new ships are also known as Expeditionary Medical Ships (EMS). These are the first new hospital ships since the introduction of the two Mercy-class units in the mid-1980s. The Bethesda class will complement the much larger USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort ships for the time being, but will eventually replace them. Heavy Metal

The threat posed by a growing number of submarines is increasing worldwide. This has prompted European and American manufacturers to develop a new generation of heavyweight torpedoes. The Black Shark Advanced (BSA) is the latest generation of heavyweight torpedoes from the Italian manufacturer Leonardo. It is in service with the Chilean, Portuguese, Malaysian and an unnamed Southeast Asian navy, which, according to media reports, is the Republic of Singapore. It has also recently been deployed by the Indonesian navy. Their three boats of the modified Jang Bogo class of type 209 were supplied by the South Korean company DSME. The BSA is also being used for the procurement programme of the...

Ships in the shade

We reported on the new Class 707 naval fuel supply vessels, which have now been laid down. However, the ways in which tankers were procured were not always so ideal. The ancient shipbuilding tradition of hammering a coin into the keel of a ship is said to have existed thousands of years ago, as coins have been found under old ship masts during excavations. This is said to bring good sailing and good luck to the ship and crew at all times. The navy has not been waiting quite as long - but quite a while - for a replacement for the outdated Rhön-class fuel supply vessels. These single-hull tankers are still doing their duty thanks to professional crews, but...
