In the course of her long life, she had many functions: Excursion steamer and cattle transporter, naval tender and refugee ship - the Albatros. Today one of the few attractions of the ageing Baltic resort of Damp, she was launched in 1912 by the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg for the "Vereinigte Flensburg-Ekensunder & Sonderburger Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft" and travelled the Flensburg Fjord as a passenger steamer until 1969. After being decommissioned and transferred to Damp, a new role had to be found for the old lady. Hapag-Lloyd has commissioned the Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to build six ships with a slot capacity of more than 23,500 TEU. The first of the newbuilds are to be delivered as early as 2024. The container liner shipping company had already placed an identical order at the end of 2020. In total, the fleet will therefore be expanded by twelve ships with more than 23,500 TEU in the coming years. Yesterday, Dr Eva Högl, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, crossed the Kiel Fjord from Kiel Naval Base in a German Navy pinnace in the direction of Laboe to visit the naval memorial there. After an official welcome by Heinz Maurus, President of the German Naval Association (DMB), Högl laid a solemn wreath in the underground memorial hall. Just a few weeks ago, Hapag-Lloyd placed a major order for 150,000 containers in China. Now the German shipping company has gone one better and ordered a further 60,000 boxes.
