Spain's pride

The Spanish navy has a wide range of capabilities. Many classes are national in-house developments with export potential. The Armada Española is one of the oldest navies in the world. It has existed since the end of the 15th century and is now the fifth largest navy in NATO after the navies of the USA, Great Britain, France and Italy. Its most important units include the Galerna-class submarines, the Alvaro de Bazan- and Santa Maria-class frigates, the Meteoro- and Serviola-class patrol vessels and the Segura-class minesweepers, as well as the Galicia, Castilla and Juan Carlos I amphibious support units. With the Patiño and Cantabria supply ships, the Spanish naval forces also have a significant naval defence force.

The fate of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis

In recent years, a whole series of warship wrecks from the Second World War have been found in the Pacific, which were lost in the battle between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. Billionaire, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, who died in 2018, had financially supported the search for such ships. Most of the expeditions sponsored by Allen were conducted from the research vessel Petrel, which also utilised remote-controlled robots. The research team achieved some spectacular successes, including the discovery of the Japanese battle cruiser Hiei and the mighty battleship Musashi, the sister ship of the legendary Yamato, the American aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2)...

Turn seven into four

As Finland turns to the West, it is also modernising its maritime armed forces. The small country is spending a lot of money on this. From a strategic military perspective, Finland is a country of extremes. With only 5.5 million inhabitants on 338,465 square kilometres, the country is relatively sparsely populated and the population is also distributed quite unevenly across the country, with a clear population focus in the south. A good 10 per cent of the country is made up of inland waters, predominantly the approximately 56,000 lakes with an area of at least one hectare, plus a forest area of 73 per cent of the national territory. The 1250 kilometre long...

The billion-euro loss

The Bonhomme Richard was not the first US Navy ship to fall victim to the flames. Has the navy learnt anything from the incident? The amphibious warship USS Bonhomme Richard was formally decommissioned in April. In a four-day fire in July 2020, the 22-year-old ship was so badly damaged that it was not worth repairing, the US Navy determined back in the autumn. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The original suspicion that the fire was started deliberately by a crew member has so far been neither confirmed nor ruled out. Submarines International: Strong together

A successful German-Italian partnership began with the construction of the submarine class 212A. Portugal is now also benefiting from the advantages of the trinational partnership. 25 years ago, on 22 April 1996, Germany and Italy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to mark the beginning of a far-reaching partnership in the field of submarines. The aim was not only to build the pioneering U 212A class submarines as successors to the German 206 class and the Italian Sauro class. Even at this time, the joint vision extended far into the future. Following the procurement phase, the MoU was extended on 2 September 2002 by a supplement...
