Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, U.S. Military Representative (USMILREP) on the NATO Military Committee, was also fired without notice in April. The Military Committee is the body that advises NATO's highest-ranking military officers from across the alliance and draws up strategic guidelines. Chatfield, a trained helicopter pilot and successful graduate of Boston, Harvard and San Diego, was the first female president of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, before taking office in Brussels. There, she came to the attention of a few conservative opinion makers for her "over-the-top" commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues. Their letter of complaint to the Secretary of Defence was probably very welcome and led to the above action by the Pentagon via his "loss of confidence in her leadership qualities". Other sources report that she refused to nail pictures of certain personalities to the wall at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Some European members of the Military Council immediately expressed concern and alienation - to put it diplomatically - at the Pentagon's new approach to personnel management.
